Posted By Prophecy in Abortion, Brainstorming/sharing, Deadly sins, Devil's corner, Ethics and MoralsThe subject of abortion is very controversial; and one that would fit right in with all of the other controversial topics on this site.
The topic may hit a particular nerve with some of you and if you are one of those individuals, I would ask that you take a deep breath, or two, and try to forgive me or anyone else commenting on this subject who clearly has not been as personally affected by it.
I would now like to ask those of you who subscribe to an organized religion to air your views twice. Firstly, I would like to hear the opinion formed through the teachings of your faith (and I expect to see this version first due to the level of influence such organized religions hold over their subscribers) and then I would like you to attempt to form your own personal view, separated from your religious beliefs. For the latter, you may have to wait a day or two for your subconscious to kick in, as we are typically not conditioned or encouraged to think for ourselves.
Please don’t be offended as this is not necessarily a stab at organized religions but at our society as a whole.
So here are just a few questions to get the debate started:
Is abortion a right?
Does abortion give us a “get-out-of-jail-free card” (so-to-speak), so that we proceed less cautiously, secure in the knowledge that there is always that option if we “mess-up”.
Who on earth has the right or authority to impose it either way? The government, a particular religion, the parents?
Do you consider it to be an act of murder?
Does the stage of development matter?
What if there was an element of rape involved? What then? Are there any special conditions under which it would be permissible? Supposing that insuch a scenario, the mother was to instead carry-out the term. What would be the consequences to the unwanted child throughout his/her life? What would be the possible consequences of such a decision on society as a whole?
