If you are in the latter camp, do you then roll up your sleeves or loosen-up your purse strings and help the one’s affected? There is no God (after all) to protect them and help them, and it could well have been us or very well be us next time.

I recently read a brilliantly post written by my 14 year old niece titled “Goldfish”.

In it, she touched on a topic that’s been on my mind for decades with no definitive answer. Sadly I’m no closer to finding an answer now than when I was first hit by it many years ago.

“ My best friend and I often joke about goldfish. When one of us forgets something obvious, the other compares them to the fish that remembers only two seconds of life before forgetting again.
But it strikes me now, how terrifying the memory-span of a goldfish is. They spend their lives, trapped, swimming in a glass bowl, and never once realize that they aren’t going anywhere. They can move in circles, and not notice or care. It seems almost ridiculous to humans that anything could forget so quickly, but to the goldfish, it would never register, because they could never hold onto a thought long enough to realize just how meaningless and pathetic their lives are.
So what if we’re the same way? What if I’m that way? Perhaps our memories are just as comparatively short, and our lives, equally meaningless. As we can think with no greater brilliance then our own memory capacity and intelligence as a species allows, we can imagine nothing better then what we already are. So just as a goldfish cannot see that it is perpetually trapped, forever running over the same ground in a meaningless attempt to go somewhere that doesn’t exist, are we not trapped in a fish bowl of our own?
For most of us, our fish bowl, our cage, is no larger than our own town or city. We have nowhere to go, and no way to get anywhere. Some people have a bigger cage: a country, or the whole planet. But even when you can fly to any country on metal wings, you are still not free. If other human beings are anything like me, than surely, you must feel the trap, sense the uselessness of our efforts, and the horror of our own limitations.
I don’t want a cage, but I will always have one. And if I must have a cage, and a limit, then I want my cage to be as wide as the universe. I want to be able to go everywhere, and never be obstructed, whether by glass, or the impossible distance and immensity of space-time that we cannot yet (and possibly never will) traverse. I don’t want to forget everything, and never even see the bars of my prison. I want my cage to expand, until it holds all that we know, and perhaps a little more.”

I can totally understand folks who are perfectly happy & content merely existing, never questioning the “authority” and the society’s dictation of their every move but what about those who want nay need to know more?

What source other than the organized religions who are mostly promised & fear-based and science which is in it’s infancy & assumed correct till proven wrong(really no different that those organized religions)are there?

I just wanted to see if we can come together to agree on the knowns and the unknowns.

I’ll start.

The Knowns:

We know that we don’t know much about the existence of God or intelligent design at least outside of what the religions teach and one’s faith.

We know that most of us actually would like to know the origin, the philosophy, the reasoning…..of it all, other than what the astrophysicists and the organized religions tell us.

We know that the religions have outlived their purpose and are currently causing more damage than good, including actual abuse, and act to separate us instead of bringing us together…

We know that some of us really need guidance from a religious organization or leader.

We know that some of us totally rely on our intuitions, judgments, conscious and our ability to decipher for ourselves the right from wrong regardless of our beliefs in God or intelligent design.

The unknowns:

Given the size of the universe, we really cannot disregard the probability of there being a creator, unless we believe ourselves to be the most inteligant beings. I should have listed that under the knowns since I am yet to meet anyone who is willing to label themselves as intelligent.

We really don’t have physical evidence that the prophets were actually here and actually said and did what we believe them to have said and done. This can also be listed under the knowns, I suppose.

We really don’t know whether there is going to be an afterlife, or reincarnations to complete the cycles, etc.

We really don’t know about the so called “Judgment Day”. Furthermore, this notion is contradictory to the concepts of a forgiving God, the idea that we were created in “his” image, that we are purposely flawed so as to self-correct or learn from our mistakes and reincarnation.

I was just recently informed by my 14 year old niece that she is bisexual.

Now I know what some of you are thinking; this is just Lady Gaga’s influence. That it’s now cool to be gay. That kids today are just experimenting and are more curious than anything else.

Well, I know my niece well enough to believe that she is for real but I’m also secretly hoping that you are wrong.

You see all my life, I have had issues with both heterosexual men and women even though I belong to that group myself.

Examples of those issues with respect heterosexual men include but are not limited to:

Their intense love for sports. If they are not doing it, they are watching it, playing it on video games, reading about it, discussing it…………..

Let’s not forget climbing the corporate ladder. That’s relentless.

There’s also the never ending need to be destructive, join the army, shoot something or activities like that.

Heterosexual women?

They become dumb early in their lives, somewhere in grade school in an effort to draw that stupid boy’s attention. From there it really escalates to bigger hair, smellier perfumes, longer nails, caked-on make-up, tighter, shorter outfits……………

Now I know that it sounds like I’m stereotyping. I fully realize that. I also realize that not all men and women are like that. Perhaps the percentage that actually are like that (in some variation) is around 50% but you must admit, that 50% is in your face.

So much so that that they begin to look like the poster-child for the entire heterosexual community. A community that I myself am not proud to be a member of. Unfortunately, the best that I could do was to receive a honorary membership from the gay community. Oh well.

So where did the 10% figure come from?

I personally don’t believe that only 10% of the population is gay, just as I don’t believe that only 20-40% of the population is introverted.

Remember just like the introverts, gays & lesbians have had to put on this mask and master hiding their sexual preferences in order to just survive. Oh sure, there are those brave flamboyant & obvious-ones but the rest are not as easily detected, not without a decent gaydar anyway.

So the next time you talk to or look at your parents, children, neighbours, co-workers, minister….. keep in mind that there is probably more like 40% non-heterosexuals amongst us.

I, for one, am only too happy to learn from them how to get in touch with my feelings, live life to the fullest and be myself, as opposed to what/who society tells me to be.

So Happy Pride my gay & lesbian friends. Here’s hoping that the rest of us can learn a few lessons from you.

Islam seems to be exercising a fair share of this practice lately but why do we (or should we) care what goes on in those countries or religions?

Well, perhaps because the practice is no longer limited to “those countries” for one thing.

Some question how the act of wanting to fit-in or be “just like” all the other citizens of the new country by the daughters was not foreseen by their parents/fathers before making the move?

Exactly how did they think their daughters would want to be dressed like, etc.?

Why exactly did these folks move to western countries if they intended to bring the old country and practices with them? By murdering their daughters and sisters and getting a life sentence, how exactly have they provided a better life for themselves and their families?

Other folks see this sort of behaviour as additional proof that we need to do away with all organized religions.
